I believe as humans we like to complicate things and learn the hard way.  But some things in life we shouldn’t choose to do the hard way.  Some decisions we make are for life.  For instance, getting behind the wheel drunk can result in somebody getting into a wreck bringing death or permanent disability.  NOT GOOD!  Everyday, we make decisions; some good, some bad.  But I believe there are two decisions in life that are critical.

One, the decision to follow after Jesus is a must.

Two, who you marry.

The first one will effect your life here on earth and for all eternity, so there is not other way but Jesus.  The second decision is one that you have to live with for the rest of your life here on earth.  We have a saying at our church to “Marry Well.”  Why?  Because you only get one shot at it.  For me, divorce is not an option unless there was a biblical reason for it.

I feel that even in the church, Christians are choosing the easy way out and just getting a divorce instead of working out their problems.  This life is hard and marriage can be even harder, but Praise God!  It is in those trials that you grow together and really get to know each other on a whole new level.  Your character is built and God allows you to practice the fruits of the Spirit through those trials.

This next part is for Born again Jesus Lovers only :
The bible talks about being equally yoked for a reason.  If you are a born again Christian why would you want to make things even harder by marrying a non believer or a non practicing in love with Jesus person?  I have seen some AMAZING marriages and the ones that are fruitful are the marriages that have Christ as the center.   When Christ is the center of the relationship you start to see true unconditional love permeate their lives, allowing for forgiveness of each others imperfectness.  If one person doesn’t love Jesus it will be a long and lonely life with trials even harder, because the person that is suppose to be your partner and point you to Christ, is focused on themselves instead of encouraging you the source of joy.

Emotions are strong, and they can get in the way of seeing who people truly are.  We can see a beautiful person on the outside who can quickly take all of our attention, but if they don’t love Jesus with all of their heart then it could be a big red flag from God telling you they aren’t right for you.  Be careful with those red flags because people can easily become idols taking us away from God instead of pointing us to Him.

So here is what comes with people that truly love Jesus with all their heart…
Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness, and Self-control

Now nobody is perfect, but this is what comes from people who have God as the center, the fruits of the Spirit at work in them.  And the more they love Jesus the more you see these fruits shine in their life.  When we apply these to a relationship or a marriage we see true unconditional love.  That is what Marriage is suppose to be like, so don’t settle for anything less if you are a Christian and love Jesus.  Marriage is suppose to be a blessing and that can happen when two people love God with all their hearts and love each other.

* For those that are divorced, please remember there is grace and forgiveness so please keep your eyes focused on Jesus.
